Why don't I see my friend's boat on the map?
The map shows vessels that broadcast AIS — freighters, ferries, and some larger boats. Most recreational boats don't transmit AIS, so they won't appear. Sharing your spot with friends is coming in v1.1.
Why does a buoy read “as of 2h ago”?
Buoys report on their own schedule — some every 10 minutes, some hourly — and they are seasonal: NOAA pulls many out of the water for winter. Erie Live always shows the honest timestamp rather than pretending data is fresher than it is.
Is this for navigation?
No. Erie Live is a companion, not a navigation tool. Ship positions and ETAs are estimates and can be delayed — always use official charts, forecasts, and your own judgment on the water.
